abused a 12-year-old from 2010 to 2011. a now familiar crime on the streets of towson. baltimore county police say a woman was robbed. mike schuh is live with more. good morning, mike. >> reporter: good morning, don. good morning, everyone. security experts are saying it's a simple fix. instead of staring at our phones while we walk we need to be concerned about our surroundings. >> last week a towson university student viciously stabbed. police say the thieves were after his cell phone. >> the value of a home life is worth a cell phone to them. >> surveillance cameras are caught brazen thieves in the act. the grab and go robbery es -- robberies on the rise. >> it's like a diamond ring or wallet. >> three suspects asked to see a woman's cell phone and took

off with it. it's a growing problem across the region. they have been reported in baltimore city, baltimore county, anne arundel and montgomery county. >> everyone seems to have an iphone in their hand whether they're texting or listening to music. it's a crime of opportunity and there's plenty of opportunities out there. >> with kiosks that accept cell phones for cash they said it's an opportunity for big money. >> they can go ahead and steal a number of these devices during an evening and trade them for cash, reaching thousands of dollars in one evening of work >> police are warning people to be more vigilant. >> i keep mine in my pocket. >> reporter: stolen cell phonee less valuable at the end of the month. that's when a nationwide stolen cell phone registry goes online. back to you. >> thank you. police say they're still searcht will lead them to a suspect. this latest incident

the amount of americans that admit to doing it keeps rising. from 2009 to 2013 the number doubled from 13 to 24%. when it comes the drivers 18 to 19 that percentage jumped from 29 to 49. >> that's crazy. >> it's shocking. you're behie , they're swerving and you know what's going on. >> the study classified searching the internet as anything from checking e-mail, websites or directions to watching videos. it also looked at texting and despite the national push for awareness and new laws 35% of u.s. drivers admit to texting behind the wheel. young drivers 18 to 29 blow that number away with a whooping 70%. >> i guess it can wait. sometimes you feel like it's mon it really is. i'm guilty. >> the biggest factor is the rise in smart phone users. with the use of technology constantly growing it will be up to drivers to play it safe. >> looking at your phone, away from driving for a second can

end in you killing yourself and somebody else. >> a new study found texting and driving doubles your chance of getting into a crash. monique griego. >> the biggest jump came from drivers ages 40 to 49. it skyrocketed from 47% to 89%. one world trade center in new york city is set to become the tallest building in the u.s.. it will stand 1,800 feet and take the title from chicago's willis tower, formally known as the sears tower. this comes after architects decided a 400 feet needle was a spire that counted towards its total height and not just an antenna. >> i think you will have a view that's unprecedented in its beauty. not that i'm competitive. >> one world trade center will

baltimore city police arrest gang members to get them off the streets. the most notorious is black guerilla family. they are so powerful its leader was calling the shots from behind bars. this morning in a wjz exclusive, a former corrections official breaks her silence, revealing to vic carter the inside story of sex and smuggling at the baltimore city detention center. >> good morning, everyone. we hear for the first time frome security chief who worked here when the bgf was in charge. >> the baltimore city detention center, more than a century old just blocks from downtown. thousands of murders, rapists and other violent offenders are locked up here. few people know the nation's most notorious gang the black guerilla family was running a sex and smuggling ring behind prison walls. >> the leader, convicted murder

33% more people will meet the guidelines to take it. a growing problem in towson. baltimore county police are telling neighbors and visitors to be aware of thieves targeting their smart phones. wjz and mike schuh are live outside county police head quarters. good morning, mike. >> reporter: good morning. new figures show that one out of three burglaries nationwide involves cell phones and experts say it's a case of attentiveness. >> last week a towson university student stabbed multiple times. police say the thieves were after his cell phone. >> that the value of a home life is worth a cell phone to them, so it frightens me. >> surveillance cameras have caught thieves in the act. the grab and go robberies on the rise. >> it's like a diamond ring or a wallet. there's something with some value there. >> now the latest incident tuesday. three suspected asked to see a woman's cell phone then

a new trial for the man accused of killing phylicia barns is set to get underway today. michael johnson is accused of murdering the teen. the 16-year-old's body was found floating in the susquehanna. johnson was convicted earlier this year but a judge ordered a new trial ruling prosecutors with held evidence about a key witness. an update this morning on a man being held for the shooting spree inside los angeles international airport. paul ciancia is now said to be in fair condition at the hospital. the man was shot by airport police moments after a tsa agent was gunned down. several other people were wounded. ciancia is facing several charges that could make him eligible for california's death penalty. a democrat is criticizing the president's handling of the affordable care act roll out. it's former president clinton. here is susan mcginnis with the latest for wjz. >> i personally believe even if it takes a change in the law the

president should honor the commitment the federal government made to those people and let them keep what they got. >> president bill clinton is among the latest to criticize president obama for failing to keep his promise. >> if you like your insurance plan you will keep it. >> that could help explain the latest poll that shows just 44% of americans view the president as honest and trustworthy. he's ordered his staff to find a solution for the 500-0000 americans losing insurance. >> gail is a health care expert and served as an adviser during the first bush administration. she said there's likely not enough time to reverse course >> how do you recontact people, reinstitute something that was scheduled to go out of business january 1st? >> republicans are pressing ahead with a plan to allow people to keep their existing policies which the white house

opposes. >> that would cause more problems and create more problems and do more harm than any good it would do. >> the house is expected to vote on the bill friday. susan mcginnis, wjz eyewitness news. >> today on capitol hill the house oversight committee will question officials about security and technical issues with the troubled healthcare.gov website. constant gridlock others issues like health care and taxes is turning off american voters. according to the latest poll only 9% approve of the job congress is doing. that's the lowest approval rating. americans blame constant gridlock and apparent inability to get things down for that low rating. turning to sports, two local universities squared off. the bears would get off to a fast start with a big dunk from hubbard. in the end the tigers blew out the bears.

>> i created my tavon mason of the kids foundation. i was trying to pinpoint what i wanted to do and having an opportunity to go to one school to speak to the kids. i saw a young kid, i believe he was in 4th or 5th grade and weighed the same amount as we did. yeah, your eyes go up. that shocked me also. i was like, my mission needs to get kids active again, along with pushing education. that's like a huge deal to me is is education. so i said i would take the education factor and then i would combine it with getting kids active. the one way of getting kids active is they love the nfl. what was the one way to get them moving? come outside with me and let's play. that's when i started doing my sports fit days in school. >> did you leave them in the dust? you are also a speed coach. somebody starting from nothing, did you take it easy on them?
